Preparing Your Vehicle for a Storm!

Living along the coast in Texas poses problems for drivers during bad weather. When a storm is in the Gulf of Mexico, TXDOT posts signs to warn drivers of the storm and to remind people to keep their gas tanks filled. Past hurricane seasons have shown the long lines at gas stations when people wait until the last minute to fill their tank while trying to safely evacuate.

What are other ways drivers can prepare for bad weather conditions?

  1. Keep your windshield and mirrors clean. Bad weather conditions can make it difficult to see, so keeping your windshield and mirrors clean will help make sure you have a clear view.
  2. Replace windshield wipers. Your windshield wipers should be replaced at least once a year or whenever you feel they are not cleaning your windshield effectively.
  3. Check your tires for proper air pressure and tread depth. Making sure you have the proper tire pressure and tread depth will help keep you from hydroplaning on wet roads. Worn tires or over-inflated tires will not provide good traction thus leading to hydroplaning.

In addition to checking the above-mentioned items, it is also very important to follow the tips below for driving safely in rainy weather:

  1. Keeping additional distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  2. Use your low-beam lights when it is raining. Don’t use your high beams because the wet roads will cause a glare for oncoming drivers.
  3. Slow down and don’t drive faster than other drivers.
  4. Use your turn signals well in advance to warn other drivers and allow them more time to slow down.
  5. Never drive into flooded roadways or around barriers blocking a flooded road. It only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry most cars away. So be safe and Turn Around Don't Drown®.
